I am a San Francisco based Creative Director with 10+ years in the beauty and fashion retail industries. I offer a unique combination of experience in brand building, print, digital and retail environments for a holistic approach to create engaging client experiences and multifaceted campaigns. This includes generating concepts, directing studio and location photo shoots, hands on graphic design, editorial direction, and creative management. I pride myself on nurturing a fun and collaborative working environment while being process driven and delivering thoughtful results. I earned my BA in Graphic Design under Lanny Sommese from the Pennsylvania State University.

1.)     What was your very first job? 

Designer, Heller Communications Design in NYC

 

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

Head of creative team, leading strategic vision for all Sephora inside JCPenney channels, including: retail environment graphics for 650 stores, Sephora site experience on jcp.com, social and digital content, and 360 marketing campaigns. Key member of leadership team driving creative vision for new business initiatives and client strategy sessions. Articulate and defend strategic thinking and creative direction to executive-level stakeholders. Ground up development of creative department process, team, and strategy. Manage a team of ten creatives, overseeing execution of elevated strategic vision.

 

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

My mom was an Art History major and owned a gallery for local artist outside Philadelphia. She recognized my passion for art at a young age and fostered it through photography and pottery classes at the community art center and painting classes with local artists. It was during a take-your-daughter-to-work day when my step father dropped me off at the graphic design team in his office where I was first introduced to design. From there, I started taking photography and design classes at the Art Institute in Philly on weekends and started a black room at my high school. I attended PSU, studied graphic design under Lanny Sommese, and took an internship in NYC at a fashion showroom working on lookbooks. I moved to NYC after graduating college and started working for Cheryl Heller at her creative agency. I continued to work for Cheryl after moving to San Francisco and starting at Sephora. I will have been with Sephora now for 10 years in June 2020.

 

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

I look to both conventional and unconventional sources. Keeping a pulse on trends through resources like WGSN, reading articles, following talented people across a wide variety of backgrounds within art & culture, and attending art events and openings.

 

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

TATA HARPER branding.
