Creative Director | SAATCHI & SAATCHI

Ly is an award-winning Creative Director currently leading content at Saatchi & Saatchi. Her versatile advertising experience includes digital, content creation, print, packaging, branding, design, CRM, experiential, social, and broadcast. She's worked across the entire consumer journey from awareness to ownership focusing on luxury, youth and mass-market consumers, most notably on the Toyota brand. Ly's list of select clients include: American Express, Callaway, Disney, Google, Honest Tea, Kia, LA Chargers, Lexus, Mattel, Powerbar, Scion, Tesla, and Toyota.  



1.)  What was your very first job? 

An intern working for the Department of Defense. Random, I know, but it was because my Dad worked there. Still does!


2.)  Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

I oversee the Content Creative Team focusing on asset generation including photo, video, CG and copy in digital.


3.)  How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? Was there a train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

I was always artistic and crafty as a child, and I discovered my love of computers when my dad brought home our first Compaq PC. I used to spend hours coding, hacking, and discovering new ways to create ASCII Art. It wasn't until Sophomore year in high school that I discovered there was such a thing as Graphic Design, which to me was a perfect pairing of both of my interests. I immediately found the most renowned school at the time, Art Center College of Design, and did everything I could to get accepted. And once I was in school, I knew I eventually wanted to be a Creative Director and the rest is history. 


4.)  In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

I find that good work comes from happy people, so if you take care of yourself (mentally and physically) and those around you, everything else falls into place. I find innovation through my amazing team who challenges me and keeps me on my toes and relevant. I find inspiration through my daily life with my family where ideas always pop out of simple needs, general interests or traveling. I also enjoying cooking as a form of meditation at the end of the day to allow my mind to reset, and my body to replenish so I'm ready to start fresh tomorrow.


5.)  If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

It wouldn't be a piece of work per se, but an internship program I created from the ground up. I've always felt that a lot internships failed in properly servicing students and I wanted to create something that was exciting, educational and beneficial to not only the candidates, but to the agency. The summer program flew in students from all over the country dividing them into cross functional teams competing against each other. They were to create a campaign that would be publicly launched and tracked with their success being determined by metrics and impact in the community. The program won a few awards and the feedback from the students was invaluable. Some of those interns I brought on years ago are still either a part on my team or my life to this day. 


6.)  Which creative disciplines do you commission most, and are most interested in seeing more of and why? Which of these disciplines are you most be interested in seeing at CONNECTIONS? (ie photo, film, social, experiential, vr, etc)

I'd say photo, film and post given that those are my areas of expertise.


7.)  What was the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?

Quitting my first dream job as a Jr. Art Director at a dream agency, Team One, to pursue freelancing and to start my own business because I wanted to do more. It paid off and I definitely wouldn't be where I am if I didn't listen to my heart.
