Group Creative Director, Writer | DAVID&GOLIATH

Greg Buri is currently Group Creative Director at David&Goliath Advertising overseeing work for the California Lottery, Shine On Sierra Leone and the agency’s first nonprofit initiative, Today, I’m Brave. Along with his brother, and climbing partner, he also helped launched, an independent travel platform, which was recently named the Lonely Planet’s top ranked travel resource for Nepal. Seven years ago, Greg found his way to LA from Canada thanks to a nonexistent border wall and has no plans to go back to the Arctic ad trenches any time soon. Before that he worked at Lowe Roche, TBWA, TAXI, and BBDO. His work has been featured in numerous international awards shows and publications, including One Show, Cannes, Clios, London Internationals, Communication Arts, AdWeek and Creativity.


1.) What was your very first job?

My very first job was at the age of 8. My official title was, “Jr. Janitor Of My Dad’s Office.” My Creative Directors were my older brother and sister. My first ad job was in Toronto as a Writer working for a Canadian ad icon named, Geoff Roche.


2.) Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

At the end of the day, my job is to hone in on a problem and find a solution that hasn’t been thought of before. It requires working across disciplines, a whole lot of teamwork and being a constant student of my industry, and all those related to it.


3.) How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was the train of events that brought you to where you are today?

I was always a bit of a closet creative and fascinated by media but put most my energy into sports. Growing up in a resource-based town of 5000 people in northern British Columbia I didn’t have a lot of exposure to creative careers, so I discovered a path to one for myself. After a couple years of playing varsity soccer at university, I took a year off and explored the world. I met people who were making their way by going down different paths. I liked that approach to life, so when I got back to school I went down a completely different path and fell in love with writing. Now I’m in LA and get to work with some of the most talented creators in the world. It could definitely be worse.


4.) In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

It’s true what the creative pundits say, “Creativity is everywhere.” I find inspiration by keeping my eyes and mind open to everything and everyone around me. I’m constantly jotting notes down in my notebook as nerdy as that sounds. I also find inspiration in getting as far away from my industry as possible and occasionally scrambling up a far-off mountain.


5.) If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

I’m proud of a lot of work that I’ve done for different reasons—whether it’s an award, an innovation, or just something that’s truly insightful. Currently though, I’m most proud of the work I’m doing with the nonprofit we started, Today, I’m Brave. I get to apply my creative chops and media savvy to impact positive change. There’s no product, no bottom line and no end to which we can reach people. All we’re doing is using our skills to find, document and share Brave stories for the sole purpose of inspiring people. And it’s working. In only a year, we’ve touched millions around the world, including companies and other nonprofit organizations, who are now rising to whatever challenge they are facing.
