Associate Creative Director | SEPHORA

Aya is an Associate Creative Director at Sephora, overseeing the branding of its loyalty, influencer, and community programs as well as running a seasonal beauty campaign a few times a year producing omni channel creative assets which can be seen in retail stores to dot com site to social networks. Prior to pursuing a career in marketing creative, Aya spent nearly a decade in publishing, providing art&creative direction to various product lines and developing both unique book and non-book formats in beauty and lifestyle categories. She occasionally works as a freelance illustrator and her work appears on product lines ranging form origami papers to flash tattoos to a photo app.

1.)     What was your very first job?

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

My job is to visualize an abstract (message, ideas, emotions) and use that to help clients  inspire desired emotions and actions in their audience. The work could one day be a video ad to raise awareness of a topic, on a different day be designing an event space for influencers. Ranges widely and keeps it exciting.

 

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? Was there a train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

That’s all what I ever was interested in as far back as I can remember. Making things and stories. 

 

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

From people I work with, and people they are working with. 

 

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

 ….. I really can’t.

 

6.)     Which creative disciplines do you commission most, and are most interested in seeing more of and why? Which of these disciplines are you most interested in seeing at CONNECTIONS? (ie photo, film, social, experiential, vr, influencer marketing, event production, production services etc)

Videos and audio/sound. I’m especially interested in them used in an interactive setting (stoppable videos, podcast ads etc) 

 

7.)     What was the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?

Moved here for a design school (I’m from Tokyo and my father thought I was crazy and didn't believe I could make living by studying art. He still supported me to do that, though!)
