Ruth BALBACH

VP, Franchise Creative | NBC UNIVERSAL

Ruth leads the franchise creative strategy and development for big bet live action properties at Universal. Ask her anything about dinosaurs and cars. 

Prior to the move to LA, Ruth was at Target Corporation, where she was the creative director for the Target brand as well as seasonal campaigns, entertainment, and licensing. She was also on the launch team that took Target to Canada.

Ruth is an award winning creative with bench strength in retail and entertainment. She is a seasoned leader with extensive experience managing deep creative teams and delivering big ideas.

Ruth has her BFA from Georgetown University, and studied design at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

1. What was your very first job?  My first paying job (besides baby sitting) was cleaning dog kennels at a barn. It helped with my passion for horses. My first career position was at a design agency in Baltimore, Maryland where I learned the value of good taste and a steady hand. This was before computers.  
2. Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. I lead the creative strategy and brand development for franchise entertainment properties. I work on the surround  - not the marketing that gets you to see the movie, but everything else that makes a movie a franchise. That includes branding, packaging, product inspiration, experiences, and partnerships. I lead an amazingly talented team of creatives and I try and stay out of their way.   3. How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?  I started out as a chemistry/pre-med major in college, and took art classes for my soul. When I discovered that one could actually make a living as a creative, then I was hooked. My passion has always been about solving problems visually and creatively, and I've been lucky to have great mentors along the way.  
4. In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?  I'm a culture junkie, and I love to travel. I have 2 sons and they keep me on top of music and social media. And I love to read.  
5. If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?  How can you pick which child you love the most?
