David Jacob Kramer is creative director and co-founder of Imprint Projects - a post-advertising creative agency. Imprint's clients include Levi's, Google, Uniqlo, Sonos, and Virgin. The agency's mission is to replace advertising with cultural production and dialogue, and to elevate the world’s most influential brands with cultural content, experiences, and community programming. Kramer is also the co-owner of a store dedicated to artist's books, called FAMILY Books, on Fairfax Ave, Los Angeles.

1.)     What was your very first job? 

I put up bill posters for local clubs and pubs in Sydney Australia where I grew up - my first foray into "advertising". It was illegal so quite well paid and if the cops caught you they simply confiscated your posters so it meant the shift was done. The only real danger was avoiding competing venues because they could get mean if you covered their posters!

 

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

I work closely with our clients to achieve their messaging objectives in whatever form that may take, from building skate parks in disenfranchised communities around the world, to stewarding collabs with artists, to making long-form branded documentaries. 

 

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

I saw an opportunity within cultural marketing to make work that supports an industry of collaboration, that both enriches businesses and also creative communities. That "doing good" can also be "good for business".

 

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

It's not hard. I own a bookstore so I have a troublingly growing book collection.

 

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

We shipped over dub reggae pioneer's King Tubby's original hand-built and painted sound system for an exhibition at the Sonos Studio. It was an art gallery devoted to the listening experience that Imprint Projects developed with Sonos. Dub fans were staring at it like it was a religious relic.
