Steve WYATT

Vice Pres of Mktg, GL CD | KENNETH COLE

Steve Wyatt is Vice President of Marketing and Global Creative Director of Brand Content Strategy at Kenneth Cole Productions. Since 2003, Steve has worked for the Kenneth Cole brand portfolio across all labels, product categories, communication channels, and global territories. He also works on all of the Company’s social impact initiatives, partnering with The Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), Help USA, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and the Sundance Institute.

Steve was born and raised in the UK, and worked as a copywriter in Manchester and London on global brands such as Alfa Romeo, Singapore Airlines, and UMBRO.

Besides trying to avoid getting into trouble on all social media platforms, Steve has just published his first humor book titled, DO MORE DON’TS – Mischievous Little Brain Farts Wafting Past the Nostrils of Decency. And because Steve never misses a promotional opportunity, this perfect gift for anyone with a dark and depraved sense of humor is now available on amazon.com and amazon.co.uk.

questionnaire

1. What was your very first job? What does it feel like to look back at it now?

I got a job as a junior copywriter with my art director partner at an agency called Cheetham Bell in Manchester in the UK. We arrived just after they’d won the UMBRO account, and then we worked on a series of new business pitches and won nearly every one. Looking back, I was put under immense pressure every day, but I developed a strong work ethic that I still have today.

2. Please describe, in your own words, what your current job is and what work it entails.

My current role is to strategize and conceptualize for a variety of domestic and global initiatives, including seasonal brand directions, product launches, and social impact campaigns. I then help steer our creative team to execute the work across all of our distribution channels and media touch points.

3. How did you discover that the creative world is right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? Which train of events did bring you to where you are today?

From a young age, I was always drawing and writing creative stories. I excelled at English language and art which drove me to get my university degree in Advertising and Design for Communication Media. After University, it was typically hard to get your first job in an advertising agency, so I completed many unpaid work placements and honed my portfolio until I finally broke through. After working in Manchester for 3 years, I went to work in London for a few years, until I was headhunted by a US-based recruiter to move to New York and work for Kenneth Cole.

4. In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how and where do you usually find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

I still read a lot of industry publications both online and in print, but they only talk about great concepts that already exist. That’s why I try to find inspiration through other avenues, such as stand-up comedy, quirky books, Interview podcasts, TED talks, and trend-forecasting seminars.

5. If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

In 2008, I was challenged to create a brand campaign for Kenneth Cole’s 25th Anniversary. I wanted to combine a style message with our social impact agenda. The solution was our “WE ALL WALK IN DIFFERENT SHOES” campaign that celebrated diverse individuals who had the courage to redefine their roles and be true to themselves. That campaign concept later evolved to be “The Courageous Class,” which we still run today with the belief that “the real models are the role models.”

6. Which creative disciplines do you commission most, and are most interested in seeing more of and why? (ie photo, film, social, experiential, vr, etc)

It always depends on the strategy, the concept, and of course, the budget, but right now film assets have become an entry-level requirement for most projects.
