From Harlem NY, Leslie is currently Senior Art Director at Bombas, an NYC-based apparel company with a mission to change homelessness. Leslie is an Art Director, DJ, Graphic Designer, Photographer, and Event Organizer & Promoter, with a background in print, packaging, experiential, and marketing. Leslie has worked with brands including Dapper Dan, MTV, Grubhub, Seamless, and Kaplan Inc. and has been featured in GD USA, AAF, and Creativity Awards.

1.)     What was your very first job? 

First job ever? Counselor at a youth center in Harlem. 

First ‘real’ job? Loading hundreds of videotapes a day into giant machines at CBS. 

First design job was marketing manager at a coffee shop, first ‘real’ design job at Levinson Tractenberg Group here in NYC, designing ads and packaging.

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

I’m the Senior Art Director at Bombas, I work with with the co-founders to lead the visual aesthetic of the Bombas brand as the company evolves from a mission-based essentials brand into an apparel brand that wants to change homelessness in the USA, along with a team of talented designers, writers and producers.

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

When I was a kid I would always draw two things: improbably fast cars with ridiculous appendages, and logos for sports teams—this is the earliest ‘design’ I can remember myself doing. Imagining wild possibilities and streamlining it into an unexpected, elegant, and practical solution to problems logical or visual is my passion.

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

Music is my biggest outlet and inspiration. I draw a lot from the art, design, and tech scenes, but music culture is a huge passion of mine and I love to translate the emotion of those experiences into my work.

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

Every night in NYC, there are 60,000 individuals on the streets without a place to call home. We organized an event to bring together 60 companies to each donate 1,000 pairs of socks (the most needed clothing item in the homeless community) distributed across 60 shelters across the city—one for each person that would be on the streets that night. A small step to making a bigger impact on the lives of those without homes in NYC.

Designing this event was an incredible, amazing satisfying challenge that you could feel the impact from.

6.)     Which creative disciplines do you commission most, and are most interested in seeing more of and why? (ie photo, film, social, experiential, vr, etc)

I’m a fan of experiential because you get to see immediate, local impact, as well as how it can spread later. Your content is created in real-time, just like a live music or art experience. There’s an energy in that that can’t be matched.

VR also really excites me for the possibilities for the disabled, elderly, and to get sci-fi for a second, better understanding the human brain and emotions as the ability to digitally interface with them increases.
