What was your very first job?

Associate Art Director at Macy’s.

 

Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

I’m leading an in house team of Creative Directors, Stylists, Art Directors and Producers who essentially make pictures, video and other visual assets for all Macy’s marketing channels. A day consists of balancing my time between 2 studios and a corporate office where I collaborate with cross functioning colleagues and my teams to make it all happen.

 

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

For as long back as age 5, I have used visuals to aide in communication. Ask a kid I would ask “what if we did it this way”?, often leading to arranging and rearranging how I see the world. Whether it’s in environments (indoors & out), graphics, objects, I am most happy when organizing in a visual way. My Southern grandmother, my Nana, called it “making pretty.” Throughout grade school I entered and won several art contests of many disciplines, eventually leading to a college scholarship. However, fine art was not my calling, commercial art was. I wanted to be Darren Stevens from Bewitched, I wanted to tell stories, sell ideas ha ha, I love it. So I majored in Advertising/Communications and minored in Visual Communications, just the right balance.

 

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

This is easy, an all day, every day enjoyable mission for me: human nature. I am a voracious watcher, an observer of people and cultures. At University we studied it: Psychographics & Demographics, Non Verbal Communication & Public Relations. But everyday we see inspired behavior on the street and in pop culture.The general public, their habits, what they buy, how they live and express themselves is endlessly inspiring and by default, it’s made to be relevant.

 

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

Easy breezy, that would be my Tuscany Per Donna campaign for Estee Lauder in the 90’s. The imagery was the epitome of visual communication, an authentic moment, the emotion that a woman shows when she feels admired. Only to be captured candidly, not staged.
