Greg received a BFA in Graphic Design from Rhode Island School of Design. He began his career in Boston, where he provided creative direction and design for a small design firm that he co-founded. Greg's desire to work in fashion led him to NYC to work at Donna Karan for the DKNY and DKNY Jeans brands, and then at Toth+Co. to oversee art direction for Nautica's youth lines, Nautica Jeans and Nautica Kids. At Carlson & Partners, Greg art directed advertising campaigns for Polo Boys and Chaps Ralph Lauren. He then worked as a senior art director at Armani Exchange. After 10 years in NYC Greg accepted a position at L.L. Bean, in Maine, as a Senior Photo Art Director. For the past 13 years, he has overseen all of L.L. Bean’s men’s & women’s location & studio photography.

01. What was your very first job?

My first job out of college was at the small design firm Crocker Inc. just outside of Boston. 

02. Please explain, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

I am the Senior Managing Photo Art Director at L.L. Bean. I manage our internal photo team and direct all on figure location and studio photography. 

03. How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was the train of events that brought you to where you are today?

When I was in high school, I took a summer art course at Skidmore College. It was then that I realized that I was meant to be an artist. When I graduated high school, I attended Skidmore and was exposed to the world of graphic design. I decided that design would be the path I would follow. After two years at Skidmore, I transferred to the Rhode Island School of Design and began an intense study of graphic design. I always loved fashion, so I set my sights on fashion advertising. After graduating from RISD, I worked in Boston for a few years and had the opportunity to work with Toth+Co on creative pitches for various fashion advertising accounts. I soon moved to NYC and began my career in fashion advertising at Donna Karan. For 10 years I worked in the fashion advertising industry in NYC. Growing tired of NYC and wanting a more balanced life and fresh air I moved to Maine and began my career at L.L. Bean. I have never looked back. However, NYC will always have a special place in my heart.

04. In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, relevant, and innovative?

I am always challenging myself and my teams to push themselves creatively and to think outside of the box. It is essential to allow yourself to fail to succeed. I try to find inspiration in my day to day life. Living in the beautiful state of Maine I find inspiration just outside my door. 

05. If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation, it required rather than recognition or "industry success," what would it be?

I am most proud of the work my team and I accomplish each year for L.L. Bean. Each season we are tasked with executing photography that genuinely embodies a joyful, optimistic representation of unforgettable moments, genuine, diverse groups of people, and real togetherness in the outdoors.

06. Which creative disciplines do you commission most, and are most interested in seeing more of and why? (ie photo, film, social, experiential, vr, etc)

I only work with commissioning photographers. I love to check out photographers who have a love for capturing the outdoors and who I feel would connect well with the L.L. Bean brand.
