Using watercolors for an authentic 1940s feel, Jacqueline Bissett worked alongside costume designer Joanna Johnston to visualise all the key garments used in the film Allied, the World War II spy romance starring Marion Cotillard and Brad Pitt. The artwork provided by the costume designer to the director Robert Zemeckis gave a clearer concept of how Joanna Johnston’s designs would look in each main scene before the costumes were made for the actors. However, the images seemed to take on a life of their own. Jacqueline worked alongside Joanna Johnston over a 3 month period, realising Joanna’s creative vision for the benefit of the film. As the garment designs were described to her by Joanna Johnston, Jacqueline used her fashion illustration expertise to quickly render the outfits. On release, the film was praised for its period accuracy and atmosphere, and the costume work was nominated for an Oscar and the BAFTAs.
