What was your very first job?
Writing for the local newspaper in my hometown, Greeneville, TN. I oversaw the “It Happened Here” section which was a report of crimes, arrests, unsolved mysteries, fires, livestock thefts and other bizarre happenings around rural Greene County. Digging through police reports each morning was exhilarating.
Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.
I am CD of Video at Hearst Digital Media so I oversee the creative for editorial and branded projects across numerous magazines and brands. Besides strategizing for the ever-changing digital landscape, I work with super talented colleagues from conception to execution. The position allows me to interact with the many departments at HDM which is quite rewarding. Encouraging people to push the limits and let their freak flags fly is my MO and I’m lucky to be in a place where my boss’ encourage me to do the same.
How did you discover that the creative world was right for you ? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery ? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today ?
When I was younger I loved 2 things: cameras and tap dancing. Although some (my mom?!) might disagree, it turns out that I’m better behind the lens than onstage. After studying English Literature and photography in college, I moved to Paris on a whim and as fate would have it, I eventually met an expatriate producer who took me under her wing and become my mentor. Looking back, it’s as if the universe chose this career for me. And I wouldn’t change a thing.
In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant ?
First, I travel. That’s most important. I rarely take the same route to work which is an easy way to discover new things. I read a lot about subjects that have little reflection of my occupation. I spend time with art, theatre, and music which always inspires me. I try to take time each day to see what the best creatives out there are shooting, producing, watching, posting and reading. I often talk to strangers.
If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be ?
Here are two completely different pieces of work that I’m proud of:
Into Harm’s Way – Broadcast Documentary - https://vimeo.com/39446462
For the Love of Gabrielle – Editorial Piece for Harper’s Bazaar - https://vimeo.com/209273032
