1.)         What was your very first job? 

My very first job was delivering newspapers in the neighborhood I grew up in in NY.

 

2.)         Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

As the Executive Creative Director of BBDO MPLS, my role encompasses wide range of things. First and foremost, I oversee all creative in the shop and help to define the vision of the agency. This means acting as caretaker for not only the work we do for our client roster, but for the agency as a brand in its own right. Beyond that, I manage the needs of the Creative Department and play a role in leading the agency forward on new business ventures as well as making sure that our relationships with our existing clients are strong as we move forward.

 

3.)         How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

I had always been interested in the arts as a kid. But, the moment I discovered what would become my career path was early on in life… Junior High, or High School. There was a show called “Thirty Something” that aired on ABC and depicted the lives of two men who worked as Creatives at an advertising agency. I realize how corny this is, but watching them in their office… surrounded by toys and art, pads and pens and laughter… made it seem like a lot of fun. I can’t be sure, but I don’t remember watching their ideas get killed over and over again, or the countless sleepless nights they put in…

 

4.)         In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

I try to get inspiration from the world outside of advertising as much as possible. As my old boss once said, “We solve our advertising problems when we’re not thinking about them.”

 

5.)         If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

I’d say that most recently I am extremely proud of the work I did on the Gun Violence Epidemic in the United States. “36,231 DOTS” was a project that encompassed so many disciplines that in essence it combined all the things I’ve learned over time in my career. From the illustrations created by hand, to the translation of those same drawings into data visualization, to the outdoor projection mapping and guerrilla tactics… the project is almost a walk through my career and everything I’ve been taught over the past couple decades. We were also able to bring a side-hustle to life by finding a client who was as passionate about the lives lost to guns in the U.S. as we were. It’s just one of those things that I put countless hours into that I hope made some small difference out there in the world…

 

6.)     Which creative disciplines do you commission most, and are most interested in seeing more of and why? (ie photo, film, social, experiential, vr, etc)

                We commission everything. At the moment, we’re building out an experiential exhibit for the United Nations General Assembly in September as well as doing stop-motion and stills for social… but a considerable amount of what BBDO MPLS does involves film. Everything.
