Tim Brunelle is a creative brand leader, writer, strategist, teacher, public speaker, entrepreneur, drummer and podcaster who’s been at the forefront of marketing innovation and storytelling since 1992. He currently serves as Director, Content & Production across the enterprise at Land O’Lakes, Inc.

  1. What was your very first job? What does it feel like to look back at it now? 

Bagging groceries at Lund’s Uptown. I learned a lot about the importance of team, and culture and respect for each other.

 

  1. Please describe, in your own words, what your current job is and what work it entails. 

Half my job is recognizing your hair is on fire and helping you put it out. The other half is helping the enterprise develop systems and habits that result in fewer people with their hair on fire.

 

  1. How did you discover that the creative world is right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? Which train of events did bring you to where you are today?

My father was an opera conductor. My mother is a painter. I knew something “creative” was my direction early on. There wasn’t any single moment of revelation. So I got a degree in Jazz Studies, then realized I wasn’t going to pay the bills playing drums and shifted to writing; a skill I always had but didn’t pursue. After college, I made a point of meeting lots of people in design and advertising, which lead to developing a portfolio and ultimately a first fulltime gig. Then, the internet happened. That opened lots of doors.

 

  1. In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how and where do you usually find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?
    My kids discover things that then inspire me… seeing how they embrace technology is specifically intriguing. I also believe it’s important to grow, stretch, and strengthen my “curiosity muscles.” That’s a huge part of my career—my value to colleagues, employers, and partners. So it’s about listening to music I wouldn’t habitually seek out; watching movies, seeing art, etc. that’s not in my normal pattern.

 

  1. If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

Way back before Spotify and Pandora, a group of us at the agency Arnold created RadioVW… an internet radio station with 30+ hours of music and commentary built upon Volkswagen USA’s connections and reputation with the world of music. Who were we to create a radio station? How might it function? We got to explore all of these issues and make something people seemed to like – the average listener stuck around for 15+ minutes, and we ultimately appealed to over 300,000 listeners in the ~20 months the idea existed.

 

  1. Which creative disciplines do you commission most, and are most interested in seeing more of and why? (ie photo, film, social, experiential, vr, etc.).

I commission a lot of video production.
