Design Director | 10 THOUSAND DESIGN

Rhinnan has known she’s wanted to be a designer since the age of six, and now has almost two decades of experience in design and direction for print, packaging, advertising, environmental and retail experience, video, and social and digital, and brand development. She has worked with some of the world’s biggest sport and action sports brands as well as collaborated with a number of small, award-winning design shops in Portland, Oregon before landing at 10 Thousand Design in Minneapolis. She enjoys spending her non-creative hours in the great outdoors, the great indoors, and both with her two doggos.

1.)        What was your very first job? 

    1. When I was twelve, my brother and I had a job assembling little wire bookholders for someone in our neighborhood. It was piece work and we could do as little or as much as we wanted. I love books and read over 100 a year, so I kind of feel like the fact that my first job is tangentially related to them is the universe’s way of having a little fun.

2.)        Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

    1. Creative and design direction is about nurturing, inspiring, pushing, and sometimes dragging the best out of your creative team.

3.)        How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

    1. My grandfather was an architect and my mother was always drawing little sketches for me. My brother and I grew up drawing and creating things. I was about six when I knew I wanted to be a designer, but I had no idea that it was actually a profession. I didn’t even know what a designer was but I did know what I wanted to do. I knew it was separate from being an artist bc I knew it was about creating the things around us that had a function.

4.)        In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

    1. I read a lot. Like, A. LOT. I try to travel as much as I can, even if it’s just a roadtrip and camping out in my car with my dogs. I try to find inspiration everywhere and bring a different and unexpected approach to my work. Lately, for me, it’s been about trying to infuse as much weirdness and coolness as possible into my more straight-laced accounts, while still staying true to the project and the brand.

5.)        If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

    1. I concepted, directed, and designed a campaign for Jordan brand for a plain training tee that the marketing director later told me was one of his favorite all time campaigns for Jordan. That meant a lot considering his experience within the behemoth that is Nike.

6.)        Which creative disciplines do you commission most, and are most interested in seeing more of and why? (ie photo, film, social, experiential, vr, etc)

 

    1. I love working with other creatives outside of design so I will try to bring in whoever I think will help get the best out of a project. I love getting that different perspective and take on a project that someone from another discipline brings.
