A reinventor at heart, Mike has been called upon by both Colle + McVoy and Olson as the catalyst to transform their agency culture and creative product. Additionally, he’s led teams at Fallon and Space 150 here in town, as well as Saatchi in San Francisco. Creative highlights include global work for the Belize Tourism Board and Cadillac. 1.)     What was your very first job? 

First job - very first job was working as a dishwasher. First job in advertising was at Bozell. The two had a surprisingly amount of similarity.

 

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails

My job as an executive creative director is to help the agency grow creatively, culturally, and financially. 

 

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

Getting into the creative world was a lucky accident. I had no idea what I wanted to do for a career coming out of high school, but bumped into someone who was an art director. He was one of the very few people who seemed to like what they did for a job — which was all I needed to hear. I signed up for art school. I had no prior interest in art so surviving the first year of art school was a challenge of solving art problems without any art-related talent. 

 

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

The best advice I was given in this industry to stay fresh and relevant was to never stop growing. If you aren't uncomfortable, if you aren't learning or doing something new it's time to move. Time to put yourself into a new situation where you can grow. 

 

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

In 2001, I helped create a lace tag for Red Wing Shoes. I know it doesn't sound like much, but it was the first time that I took a print ad brief and changed it into a customer experience —something that lived beyond advertising. (They're still making and handing them out today.)

 

6.)     Which creative disciplines do you commission most, and are most interested in seeing more of and why? (ie photo, film, social, experiential, vr, etc). 

 The work I enjoy, and commision most, today is experiential and environmental. The opportunities to create innovative work that people really enjoy (and sometimes really need) are endless.
