I've worked on campaigns from beer to toilet bowl cleaners and everything in between for Ogilvy, Leo Burnett, DDB, BBDO and Y&R. Currently I’m a VP|CD at Epsilon, creating data-driven digital, social and design solutions for a wide range of clients. While the screens are getting smaller, I believe the ideas have to be even bigger. I've won my share of awards along the way and have always prided myself on being able to work on whatever the assignment and try to find the fun in it.

What was your very first job?

My first real job was as a key-line and pasteup artist for Evans Furs. I realized early on that I wanted to create the ads, especially after I was asked to Xerox the storyboards from the guys at Eisman, Johns and Laws, and I said to myself “You need to do this”.

 

Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

The job’s main focus is coming up with ideas that solves a client’s problem in an engaging way. But the second and sometimes harder part is to keep them from sanding all the edges off and making something no one is happy with in the end.

 

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

From as early as I can remember I loved to draw and color and could and did do it all day long. Plus, I also loved to watch TV and knew early on I wanted to make stuff that a lot of people would watch.

 

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

When it comes to marketing, I feel that a great idea or human truth will outlive the technology du jour, but that being said I watch what my teenage kids are interacting with and what is winning at Cannes.

 

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

I’ve been lucky to have some great partners and even better bosses, so picking one is tough, but I’d have to say the “Wish Big” campaign I did for Sears. It was one of those ideas that was simple and truthful. We were able to work with the best of the best, Noam Murro directed and Stan Winston made the props. Their attention to detail and desire to simplify was a joy, plus I got to make them with some of my favorite people in the business.

 

Which creative disciplines do you commission most, and are most interested in seeing more of and why? (ie photo, film, social, experiential, vr, etc)

 

The way things are going currently I/we probably mostly hire a great Director of Photography. It’s getting to a point where we are able to produce and direct our own work, but need it look great.
