Christopher McGauran is an accomplished creative with over 20 years of experience combining design, illustration, photography, copywriting and concept development. He is currently a Creative Director for the international team at Beam Suntory (Jim Beam) Prior to working at BSI, Christopher worked for various Chicago advertising agencies for over 20 years, and started his own photography shop “Crisp Creative”.  His interest and passion for photography is part of his every day creative process. When not working, Christopher and his wife Jen are avid restauranteurs, new parents, and travelers. His favorite cocktail is a Knob Creek Rye Old Fashioned.

1.)     What was your very first job? 

I was a bag boy at a grocery store when I was 14.

 

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

I am a Creative Director on the Design Team for Beam Suntory (Jim Beam). I work on all Beam’s brands from packaging design to brand strategy.

 

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

I knew I was a creative before I knew what creative was. Drawing and an avid imagination began early on. When people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up I would replay “an Idea man.” I thought this job would entail wearing a white lab coat with those words stamped on my nametag.

 

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

Keeping an eye out for new and brilliant creative is a job in itself. Things move at such a faster pace than they used to. I try and dedicate part of every week to just surf the net on my favorite creative blogs and try and attend creative seminars. It’s important to always remain “curious.”

 

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

I was tasked to shoot in Jarnac France for Courvoisier 2016. We covered 3 grueling days of material shooting the harvesting of the grapes that make cognac, the distillery, the bottling plant, the cooperage, and even the Courvoiser family dinner for the harvest. I believe it’s the best photography I have ever done, and the experience of it all I will never forget.
