Lu HOWLETT

Head of Art Buying | IRIS WORLDWIDE

Lu arrived in London from Sydney’s sunny shores in 1999.  After cutting her teeth in the ad biz at the likes of Lowe Lintas, TBWA, Publicis and M&C Saatchi she jumped ship to go back and hone her craft at University of the Arts London.  Graduating with a degree in Photography & Fashion Lu re-entered the creative industry as a freelance stylist & producer. 

After near a decade styling and producing shoots within fashion, music, and advertising she was entice back to agency life by, at the time, emerging independent shop Brothers and Sisters.  Lu successfully established the Art Buying offering at Brothers and Sisters, later managing integrated projects.

Now heading up the Art Buying department at iris worldwide, Lu oversees all photographic/illustration commissioning and production throughout the London agency offering support to the global network.

What was your very first job?

Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

I head up the Art Buying Department at iris.  With support from my very talented team, I’m responsible for managing art & photographic commissioning at iris including; offering creative inspiration to creative teams, artist search & commissions, talent sourcing, fee negotiations, pre-prod & shoot production

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?   

From a young age I was drawn to the art room and darkroom, although at leaving school I was still unsure of my path.  My first job opened my eyes to the media industry and I naturally feel into advertising.  My early years working in advertising uncovered my love for imagery, this love led me back to study fashion & photography.  I then became involved in the process of image making as a stylist which led me to production and later into the world of image commissioning - when one door closed another opened.

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

Look & listen, inspiration is everywhere.

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?  

From 2017, I would say the adidas UBX running campaign, we managed to turnaround a cracking production within one week of commissioning the photographer, creatively and logistically it was challenging, although a piece of work we can all be proud of.
