Andrea WALJI

Director of Art Buying | HAVAS

Andrea Walji moved from Vancouver to London in 2000, and since then has been a Photographers Agent, Art Buyer in advertising agencies, and a Producer.

Andrea’s production company Triangle Monday produces global campaigns for commercial clients such as Apple, Bentley, Dior, The Guardian, and countless advertising agencies.   Andrea also produces short films bringing awareness to the illegal wildlife trade, conservation and environmental issues.

Recently, Andrea produced Nature Now featuring Greta Thunberg and George Monbiot about natural climate solutions.  The film, which has an Albert Certification as a zero-carbon emission film, went viral and reached over 48 million viewers since it’s release in September.

What was your very first job? What does it feel like to look back at it now?

My first job was working on Grouse Mountain  as a liftee, basically manning the ski lifts, snow or sunshine! Looking back on it I realise how much I loved nature, the outdoors and working with people even then.  So in that respect, not a lot has changed.

Please describe, in your own words, what your current job is and what work it entails.

I actually have 2 jobs currently: one is as Director of Art Buying at Havas, where I’m freelancing covering maternity leave. It entails meeting photographers, artists, illustrators and agents, and commissioning them for appropriate briefs, as well as producing their shoots.  My other job is my passion work which I do when I get home at night and every weekend:  researching and writing short films on conservation and the environmental issues facing us today, and then producing the shoots and raising awareness with the films.  All of my films have a call to action and are aimed at making a tangible difference in our world today.

How did you discover that the creative world is right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? Which train of events did bring you to where you are today?

When I was 6 or 7, I made 2 books at school. They were made out of drawings and paper and a proper binding, which were about animals in the wild.  From then on I painted and drew a lot, and did very well in art.  I was awarded a scholarship to college and studied photography and art history.  I studied under Jeff Wall at UBC, so that was probably when I decided to move to London to be a famous photographer.  Although I didn’t become a commercial photographer myself, I did set up a photographers agency and began my creative career that way.

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how and where do you usually find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

By going to gallery exhibitions, private views, talks, and being around creative people, I am constantly inspired and amazed! There really is no limit to creativity with people, anything goes, as long as you believe in it!

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, especially for the creative work and innovation it required rather than its recognition or industry success, what would it be?

Definitely making my films “Not A Pet” and “Nature Now” this year, they’ve been game changers for me.
