With the vision of a fresh creative agency in Central-Eastern Europe, Gabor Spielmann is leading Kabooom Advertising as Creative Director and Partner.

He has worked for Sylva, Ogilvy and Grey Budapest for 13 years,  making all three agencies the most awarded ones in their history during his time there. He has been winning awards for 13 consecutive years across all disciplines. His trophies and shortlists include: Cannes Lions, London International, Epica, ADC Europe, Eurobest, New York Festivals, Cresta, Golden Drum Grand Prix, Meribel Grand Prix

Gabor’s work has been featured in Gunn Report Top 50 and he was the only Creative Director from Budapest to rank in PIAF in 2013.

Driven by the vision of increasing creative level in his country, Gabor has made steps for searching young talents and established the first ever Cannes Young Lions Contest in Hungary in 2010. His new ambition is just under way: creating an exclusive network of independent agencies led by top creative friends across Central-Eastern Europe.

What was your very first job?

During my College years my first real “salary” was the product itself that I had to write the copy for. It was a Police pair of sunglasses.

Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

I have always been the type of a Creative Director, who directs himself, too. I still enjoy coming up with concepts, lines, visual solutions as well as helping and directing my creatives.

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

In College I applied for Faculty of Advertising. As soon as I realized that advertising required both structural and intuitive thinking I fell in love with it. There are only very few jobs in the world to use both of these abilities. I consider myself really lucky that building my career has been very direct and fun, with ongoing awards and promotions from my mid-twenties.

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

To keep your work fresh, you have to stop wanting to be fresh. Forget advertising, and just have an open your eyes and mind. My favorite tool is travelling. Possibly with a backpack and getting to know all that is different. I even took a freelance job in Kenya to combine my two favorite things: advertising and travelling.

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?
