Chief Creative Officer | LEO BURNETT

After studying law Andreas Pauli started working as an assistant for a photographer. This lead him to study photography and design and then starting a career as an Art Assistant for McCann Erickson in Frankfurt in 1990. He later went on to TBWA´s GPP and Lowe & Partners. In 1999 Andreas Pauli joined Leo Burnett as Creative Director. Ten years later he was appointed Chief Creative Officer of Leo Burnett Germany.

In the span of over 25 years in advertising he worked for clients such as AEG, Deutsche Bank, Puma, Fiat, Samsung, Goodyear, Philip Morris, P&G and McDonald´s.

Andreas Pauli has won and helped win more than 200 national and international awards including Cannes, One Show, D&AD, Clio, Eurobest, London International, New York Festivals and ADC Germany. His belief is that brand communication should be insightful and try to adress human needs.

What was your very first job?

As a painter in my fathers painter workshop. 

Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

I don´t work anymore. I try to give the billard balls the right direction so that they fall in the right pockets.

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

It was the other way around. I discovered that the other world was not right for me. The creative world was the emergency exit.

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

One can get a lot of inspiration from looking at the work of the old masters in design, photography and art instead of trying to be „trendy“ all the time.  

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

Looking back at more than 25 years in advertising a „most-proud-of-piece“ is hard to nail. I am still proud of having survived my first job as an Art Director shooting a campaign for Puma with 4 world champions in athletics.
