Timothy Shey is a producer, designer, startup founder and former Google executive best known for his work developing YouTube's original programming, YouTube Spaces, and creator development programs.  Prior to YouTube, Tim was co-founder and president of Next New Networks, and co-founder and creative director of Proteus, a pioneering interactive agency with clients including AT&T, HBO, ABC, FOX, and The Washington Post. Tim and his work have been featured in places like The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, The New Yorker, USA Today, WIRED, TechCrunch, and AdWeek’s “The Young Influentials.”

1.)     What was your very first job? 

 

Paper route for Long Island Newsday, I think? Around that same time I was a night janitor at a pasta factory, a busboy, a sailing instructor, an apprentice cabinetmaker, not sure what came first.

 

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

 

I'm usually working as an exec producer or a creative director, both of which involve putting talented and skilled people together to make projects happen, helping solve problems along the way, and trying to make sure we achieve whatever the goals were that we started out with for the project. Most of the time, you're trying to look out for the audience – being the project's biggest fan.

 

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

 

I found myself working in the creative world before I realized that it was an actual thing you could do for a living. A friend and I started a company in college that quickly turned into an agency with clients and employees, and we had to figure out what that work entailed as we went along. I've just followed passions and interests since then. 

 

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

 

I try to stay in a position where I'm always working with new creators – that's the thing that most inspires me. If you're always working with talented new voices, by definition you're going to be working on things that are fresh and relevant and new.  

 

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

 

I'm really proud of the work we did putting together the Next New Networks line up - in part because some of those shows are still going, ten years later, like Threadbanger and Vsauce - in part because we did it pretty punk rock with no real production or marketing budgets and still got to billions of views - but more than anything because it required me to let go of trying to control the creative and sign off on everything, like I'd done in the past as a creative director, and instead focus on creating an environment that allowed all kinds of great creative to happen, at scale. A lot of things I've worked on since then - the kinds of global programs we did at YouTube - worked best when they were based on the same idea.
