Peter B. CURY

Design Director | THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

Peter is the Design Director of The Hollywood Reporter. A native New Yorker, he moved to Los Angeles in 2010 for the opportunity to refresh, re-brand and redesign the eighty-year-old entertainment publication. Since joining the magazine, he has helped shape the look and feel of the magazine by focusing his attention on typography, illustration, photography and infographics. Before making his move to Los Angeles, Peter was an award-winning magazine art director for InStyle Magazine and Condé Nast Portfolio among other titles, and helped redesign People Magazine, Entertainment Weekly and Fortune Magazine. His illustrations, under the name Brunoillo, have appeared in GQ, Esquire, T Magazine (The New York Times Style Magazine) and Men’s Journal. He has also designed several custom fonts, logos, books, infographics and marketing materials for a range of clients including The San Francisco International Airport, Coca-Cola, American Illustration, New LA Charter School, Big Brothers and Sisters of Los Angeles and ThePointsGuy.com. Peter received his bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design from U.C. Berkeley.

questionnaire

1. What was your very first job?

My first design job was to create ads for clubs and restaurants for The Guardian in San Francisco.

2. Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

I work with the Creative Director on distributing Hollywood Reporter stories to our design team, assign illustrations and recommend illustrators to other designers and of course design pages. Before designing anything, I meet with editors and writers (and photo editors) to figure how best to tell their stories with the space and assets available. Through it all, I am constantly prioritizing these various aspects of my job with the hopes of finding a happy balance between maximum performance and relative sanity.

3. How did you discover that the creative world was right for you?Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

I’ve always enjoyed drawing, even as a child. Ultimately that interest and ability led me to an arts high school and then to study Architecture in college. In college, my architectural projects were ‘meh’ at best, but the posters I designed to champion the projects were far better. Acting on that realization led me to design the Architecture journal at the school... and then to ads for The Guardian... and so on.

4. In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

I spend a lot of time looking at websites about art, fashion, sneakers, design, music and for lack of a better word—feeling. Seems like there are a lot of blogs that curate to create moods -- and I love that. Of course I also go to museums and galleries when I can. And my kids and wife are always keeping me fresh!

5. If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

Honestly, the sheer volume of work I produce a year makes me proud. And bonkers.
