Currently Senior Designer at Lyft, Meghan has spent most of the last fifteen years as a freelance hired gun working for ad agencies, design studios and direct to client as an art director, illustrator, designer and animator. She thrives at the intersection of interactivity and motion graphics. In addition to award winning professional work for clients including Apple, MTV, Target & Gap, Meghan maintains a lively personal practice using calligraphy, letterpress, screenprinting as well as Python, JQuery and CSS.

1. What was your very first job?

Newspaper girl at 11. Production Artist at Zentropy Partners, an interactive ad agency, upon college graduation.

2. Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

Senior Designer at Lyft.  I manage a team of a several other designers and have been working on shaping various iterations of the brand as the company has evolved from 70 people to over 700.

3. How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

I never wasn’t in the creative world so it didn’t feel like a choice. I was a child actor that went on national tour, and then I was a high school kid who wanted to be Bertolt Brecht. From theatre direction I moved into interactive design - I wanted to make the things on the computer instead of with the people. Onto broadcast design so I could make them even cooler with no download speed, k size, or browser compatibility.  I’ve worked on websites, show packages, film titles, commercials, branding, and now at a tech start up. Every experience adds to the rest.

4. In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

Keen observation.  A piece of instruction I received as a teen from the amazing artist and teacher, Wendy Lehr, has guided me to this day —  she told us that, as actors, “You are no longer an amateur human being,”  you must always be observing behavior, relationships, movement. As a designer, this has translated to always examining the graphic language and visual patterns around me - building signage, flyers, the way the light hits, parallax from the passenger seat, the way a tv show translates to tumblr.  It never turns off, every moment is a chance to make connections. Nothing is unrelated.

5. If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

Creating an anthropomorphic display for a healthcare robot.  Bringing to bear motion design and layout techniques to create a “face” that could project status from afar on the monitor of a moving computer, then seamlessly transition into displaying more detailed information, as well as provide a comforting presence in a sterile environment.
