Megan FLETCHER

Megan Fletcher is the Global Art Director of Benefit Cosmetics. She has worked in the beauty industry for 17 years. She attended Stanford University and Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where she graduated with a degree in Communication Design in 1999. After a short stint at WGBH Design in Boston, she moved to New York and started working at Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. She landed in San Francisco in 2003, and knocked on the Benefit Corporate Office’s door, which led to a 14+ year career there. She loves travel, cities, fashion, writing, and photography. She lives in San Francisco with her husband and two children.

1.) What was your very first job?

Age 14, Monday nights, 5-9pm, manning the Boylston (MA) Center Store (only store in small New England town my family and I lived in for four years.) Cashier and early visual merchandising experience arranging the candy display ;)

2.) Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

I run the Benefit Art Department, which produces all the product packaging, product catalog, photography, and launch visuals for this global cosmetics brand. Benefit is very eclectic. New products look and feel like their own brands sometimes. We have a lot of fun and also handle not-so-fun tasks like translations and bottom-labels. I work with almost every other team at Benefit, in some way or another… Finance, Legal, Marketing, Packaging Developers, Planners, HR, Copy, Product, IT... Leadership comes naturally to me. Art direction does too. Having been at Benefit almost 14 years, sometimes I have to remember to challenge myself to keep pushing for the best. I manage a large budget and make tactical, logistical decisions, as well as artistic ones. My pet-peeve is being dismissed as a “creative/right-brained type.” I am equal parts right- and left- brained.

3.) How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

After a highly-productive high school career and a year at Stanford, I was burnt out on academics. I had always loved photography and textiles and applied to art schools. I think my love of words brought me to graphic design. In school, I was able to write the content and make it pretty.

4.) In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

Travel – and spending time with the younger generation. (my kids are 11 and 13). Shopping, magazines, watching people create great things.

5.) If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

Would have to be personal. I designed a tiny house in my backyard recently. At work, I am proud of so much. Our recent brow visual, which happened organically and almost accidentally, was a really fun project.
