Jimmy LENOIR

Art Director | SEGA

Jimmy is a French-born Art Director/Designer living and working in Los Angeles, CA. After studying art in Paris he joined an advertising agency and moved to London in the late 90’s. After a few years of working in advertising, he pivoted his career and began working as a senior designer for the licensing team at Disney Europe. He ended up moving to Los Angeles where he’s been working in the licensing and fashion industry until he joined the creative team at Sega America. In his off time he is pursuing a few personal creative projects: Launching his jewelry/fashion brand, designing interior furniture and parts for his custom cars. In the future, he would love to work with an architect to design his ideal home, both the structures and interiors.

questionnaire

1.)     What was your very first job?

My first job in design was at a screen printing studio, where I would also experiment with screen printing record cover art onto the back of all my leather jackets. I still love screen printing since that first exposure.

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

In my current full time job for Sega America, I oversee all creative for marketing and licensing, and I also lead the review of art direction for trend guide creation.

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

I always wanted to study art but I grew up in the countryside in France and all the best schools were in Paris. I left school early and moved to Paris. I wanted to have a better choice of schools and cultural inspiration. I liked punk music and went to shows nightly. These shows exposed me to a vast creative pool of people, many of whom were studying in art school. Inspired by the people I met, I soon returned to school to pursue a career in art and design.

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

Just looking around and paying attention. Inspiration can be found in everything and everywhere.

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

One of my favorite animated movies is Nightmare Before Christmas. I greatly admire the design and creativity of the film and so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to design style guides and products for that property 3 years in a row, when I was working for the Disney Store Creative team in London UK.
