Emily Meinhardt is a design producer at Google where she guides the creation of imagery for users to express their emotions and personality in Google’s messaging products. Prior to Google, she led product launches for Adobe.com and managed branding projects at a creative agency. Emily graduated from Claremont McKenna College with a degree in art history and government and serves on their alumni board.

1.)     What was your very first job?

My very first job in high school was working for an interior designer. I prepped moodboards, managed samples, and maintained her extensive archive of textiles and other treasures.

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

I lead the creation of stickers for Google Allo, our newest messaging app. My job is really fun blend of art direction, project management, ethnographic research, and product strategy. I work with creatives in local markets to develop messaging and visual styles that we hope will resonate with our target users. A typical day might consist of a reviewing sketches from artists, negotiating licensing terms, and digging into image compression with an engineer.

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

I had my birthday party at the Art Institute of Chicago when I was 5 years old. Later, I worked for a fine artist who named her pieces after classic rock songs. In college, I was downright excited to do the reading for my art history courses. I feel lucky that I landed in a job where I get paid to talk about art all day and find it truly rewarding to help creatives realize their vision, whether that means advocating for more artist-friendly terms in contracts or asking an illustrator to use a thicker stroke for legibility.

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

Instagram is the best place to fulfill my need for professional inspiration and social connection. I read Pitchfork Review, California Sunday, and Juxtapoz with some regularity. Even though I’m working in a tech context, I think it’s important to pay attention to design in other industries - restaurant menus, album covers, fashion shows, and the like.

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

During my time at a creative agency, I produced an animated video about domestic violence for a local nonprofit. Finding the right metaphors and style for such a sensitive topic was challenging, but to have a final product that felt both uplifting and beautiful was a meaningful success for both our client and survivors of domestic violence.
