Emily Blank is a Brooklyn/Philadelphia native, who moved out West in search of a warmer life. In addition to the better weather, she discovered a passion for bringing her editorial photo style to the tech industry. After ten years as a freelancer working at GQ, Marie Claire, The Hollywood Reporter, Harper's Bazaar, Bloomberg and Apple she is thrilled to be working full time for Google as their Photo Director of Material Design.

1.) What was your very first job?

My very first job was at Ricky’s just south of Union Square in New York City. However, my first photo-related work was at GQ.

2.) Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

As Photo Director for Material Design at Google, I work on photo production, curation and systems. I also consult on photography for other Google projects and products.

3.) How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

I always knew that photography was the career that I wanted to pursue. I credit my years as a freelancer, the talented people I worked with, and the variety of photo-related jobs I held with getting me to where I am today.

4.) In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

Travel, travel, travel….I love the idea of home, but I want many places to embody that feeling. Two years ago, I got in the car with my husband, dog and two suitcases and drove cross country. We were supposed to be out west for six months; two years later, we are still here (with our new baby girl, Noa) and trying to decide where to go next.

5.) If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

While I was at Marie Claire, I produced a story about women who survived terrorist attacks in the United States -- from Columbine to Sandy Hook. It was one of the hardest productions I have ever had to do. The level of care that was put into this shoot paid off in the end. It was the tragic event that brought each woman there, but it was each other’s experiences that created an intimate and cathartic effect for all of them.
