questionnaire

1.)     What was your very first job?

I was a stylist at the now defunct Teen People magazine in NY.  It was the heyday of teen culture: Britney, ‘NSync and Backstreet. Those were epic days full of adventure and all film shoots!

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

I lead a hardworking in-house creative services team. I’m responsible for all marketing design activities to ensure brand integrity.  I conceptualize ideas and present work to internal clients and the executive team, including seasonal Ad campaigns and seasonal trend shoots for in-store and online. I’m responsible for all assets supporting HQ, visuals, licensees, wholesale and e-commerce. It’s a highly matrixed organization. Every day is a puzzle and it’s super high-speed and fun.

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was the train of events that brought you to where you are today?

I was 11 years old and my father bought me a book about Mexican female artists. I remember staring at it and my dad asked me if I wanted to be an artist. I said, “Sort of, I want to be the woman that puts a book like this together.” It was the first time I realized graphics was a job. I started laying out music fliers and playing with Xerox machines at my uncle’s print shop.

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?  I work in a young industry surrounded by lots of creatives. I keep young friends, and I’m always drawn to youth for their quickly moving culture. When something starts to change I notice it right away and get excited at the prospect of re-invention. Also, the 3M’s:  music, movies and magazines keep me inspired every single day. But music above all else…once the music comes on at work, people know I’m going hard.

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

Everything I did creatively before there was a paycheck involved. Late night rogue photoshoots with creative friends are the ones that stand out to me the most!
