During his 16 years in design and advertising, Trevor has worked with teams of all shapes and sizes and created some culturally-influential work along the way. Whether it was for Samsung & Rihanna’s “ANTIdiaRy” or HBO GO, Trevor’s unique style can be recognized for its craft & vision with a healthy balance of pragmatism. For the last ten years, he's been at R/GA New York, helping develop it's unique practice of collaboration between creative disciplines by leading an array of projects ranging from integrated campaigns to events to product & service design. Currently, Trevor’s focus is on developing ‘IP' for brands that can be expressed within culture through a broad range of media and contexts.

What was your very first job?

Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

I lead a large team of creatives from various disciplines to collaborate on projects that integrate design, tech, and storytelling in unusual ways. 

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

During my ‘gap year' I was living in San Francisco during the first dot com boom. I was poor, and surrounded by rich people who made their money from absurd ideas for the new economy. It felt new and I wanted in, but the only skill I knew I had was drawing, and I had a passion for letterforms especially after flirting heavily with graffiti. I had to make something of that. Music or film were preferred, but I was untrained in both and they were too risky anyway. I didn’t have good grades in school or any money, so when I was accepted into a small (and inexpensive) art school in my hometown, I was lucky. In our first year, we had a graphic design course, and the minute I learned what that was, I knew this was my calling – I found something I could use my visual skills for to avoid poverty AND professional boredom. I was in love. 

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

I’m neurotic by default so I’m right at home in NYC. In order for neurotics to be inspired enough to act on their ambitions, they have to be delusional, which I'm also pretty good at. So if you're both of those things it’s a deeply inspiring place because it's egalitarian for anyone with a serious work ethic. You aren’t so-and-so’s cousin? No problem. You’ve never done this before? Who cares, try it out. It’s a haunted metropolis plagued by gentrification, tourists, and Australian coffee shops. And deluded neurotics from everywhere. 

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?
