My name is Tim Nolan. I am a product of New York City's Silicon Alley, and have been proudly serving the Internet since 1996. I am an Executive Creative Director at Huge. I'm also a co-founder of Universalscene, an art practice that explores the intersection of technology & popular culture. I also sit on the Rhizome Council, an organization that supports contemporary art and creates richer and more critical digital cultures. 

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have worked at some of the most respected digital and traditional agencies in the world. My work in advertising has recognized and awarded by The Cannes Lions, The FWA, One Show, Effie Awards, & The Webbys. Over the years, I have exhibited my personal work globally, and can be found on permanent collection in the Digital Archive of the La Biennale di Venezia.

What was your very first job?

I worked in a small neighborhood kitchen making breakfasts. Needless to say, I make a pretty awesome breakfast sandwich.

Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

I run global creative for the Vice digital agency, Carrot. I oversee all work from our New York and Los Angeles offices.

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

When I was very young. I spent a lot of time with my mother who was an oil painter. I would paint and draw for hours. When I was about ten years old I began filling my room with cameras, VCRs, mixing boards, dual cassette players, turntables and TVs. I was fascinated with mixing the mediums. Once the Internet came to be, it felt like the perfect medium for all my childhood efforts.

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

I tend not to look at anything that is going on in the industry. I spend a fair amount of my free time advising, mentoring, and working with a few start-ups from an incubator at the New Museum in New York as well as a number of collaborative projects within the fashion industry.I find those two worlds provide unique and interesting perspectives that I learn from. Beyond that just walking around my neighborhood in NYC is a constant source of daily inspiration.

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

While working for Playstation we created the first ever console to web API. We built a platform to auction off props and wardrobe from the PS4 launch spot to the gamers. “Bid For Greatness” turned PSN Trophies from The PlayStation Network into a real world currency. It felt great to reward the loyal gamers and insure these items did not end up in cold storage.
