Suzanne DONALDSON

As Executive Director of Photography at Glamour magazine for over a decade, Suzanne collaborated with world-class photographers including Bruce Weber, Patrick Demarchelier, and Ellen Von Unwerth, winning multiple ASME awards along the way. Prior to Glamour, Suzanne helped shape direction and content for such seminal properties as Interview, Self, Oprah, Lucky, and Vanity Fair magazines, shooting with both highly established and emerging photographers such as Tim Walker, Matt Irwin, Gregory Harris, Sebastian Mader, Emma Summerton, and Billy Kidd. As an independent brand strategist and creative director, Suzanne has worked with Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, Shinola, and Swatch to build consumer concepts and visual content across editorial, advertising, web, and social media platforms. She has had strong exposure in the agency and fine art sectors of photography as well, working with Wieden and Kennedy, The Arnell Group, Luhring Augustine Gallery, and the Robert Mapplethorpe studio.

Personally, she is also the owner and founder of Mrs. Sizzle, a widely popular “chic pet” site that features celebrities and creative personalities with their pets, uniting her passions for high-end photography and animal advocacy. As a committed athlete, Suzanne competed in the Chicago Marathon, and as a cancer survivor, she also raised over $80,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as part of her run. She and her husband Steve just moved to Portland from New York City – you might have seen the story on their home published this month in the style section of New York Magazine - with their twin beloved mutts, Edie and Clair.

What was your very first job?

A photo editor a stock photo agency called FPG.

Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

Senior Director of Creative Production in Global Brand Imaging – An arbiter of relevant photography, styling, production and talent for various Nike categories.

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

It all started with my high school yearbook. As a photographer and someone who was obsessed with editing images, my career path was articulated at a very young age. After I finished college I attended the Maine Photo workshop where I came to discover that I was much more adept in speaking about photography rather than taking my own pictures.

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

I am a slave to Instagram.

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

My early years as the Photo and Art Editor under Ingrid Sischy.
