Chief Creative Officer | HUDSON ROUGE

Jon is the Global Chief Creative Officer of Hudson Rouge, an advertising agency in the WPP network. Based in NY with offices in Shanghai, Toronto, Mexico City and Detroit, it was set up to help transform the Lincoln Motor Company into a vibrant and contemporary brand. The agency is now set to take on a select group of other luxury brands and projects. Prior to that, Jon was ECD at BBH, New York, where he headed up the Johnnie Walker business, Starwood's Westin Hotels, the BBC, and was global lead on Unilever's Vaseline business.

Before BBH, Jon spent seven years as GCD at Team One, leading the creative group responsible for every aspect of Lexus and developing work in all mediums, from television to online, events and partnerships. Throughout his career, he’s been recognized by every major awards show including Cannes Lions, One Show, AICP, Communication Arts, Addy, Adweek’s “Best of the Decade” and Effies.

What was your very first job?

I took my History degree and went to work selling ad space for a newspaper in New Jersey.

Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

I lead, and hopefully inspire, the entire creative team at Hudson Rouge. The agency was designed around attracting best-in-class talent here in New York to help transform Lincoln from a heritage brand for older folks to a luxury car you’d actually consider driving. It’s my job to ensure that our work walks the walk of a contemporary brand, and to continuously show up in culture in interesting ways that prompt a reappraisal of Lincoln.

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

I was a History major in college, but my first love was always photography. My parents both went to art school, so there was a strong creative thread running through my family. At my first job selling ad space, I was a terrible salesman, but I started making up ads for the local businesses to place, and realized that I was actually better at crafting the message than selling the space. That’s when I realized I needed to be in an ad agency.

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

First, I’ve always been a voyeur, and naturally curious about culture and the world. I read everything. I still take pictures. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become a bit numb to the proliferation of mere stuff. So I’ve tried to create and inspire work that isn’t boring. That either tells a great story or makes you feel something.

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

We’ve been able to create a lot of work for Lincoln lately that I’m proud of, but one that stands out is our collaboration with the musician Beck. To launch our “Hello, Again” campaign, we had him reinterpret David Bowie’s Sound and Vision, orchestrated with 167 musicians of every genre. We brought in Chris Milk, who masterminded a circular stage with rotating recording and filming equipment. It was an amazing live event, but also a 360 immersive digital experience for everyone else. Using facial recognition via your laptop’s camera, you could simply turn your head to revolve the stage to go from hearing metal guitars to gospel singers belting out the song. It was a miracle it all came together and the awards recognition was great, but the outpouring of people’s comments on the experience was the most gratifying part.
