Jacob is the Creative Director and Co-Founder of NR2154, a creative studio based out of New York City and Copenhagen. Primarily working with projects in fashion, luxury, lifestyle, and culture, he oversees the graphic and creative development of visual identities, magazines, books, exhibitions, environments, packaging, videos, campaigns, and brand strategies, across digital and analog expressions. His passion for art direction grew out of many years in the magazine world. He founded Metropolis and F100 Magazine in Denmark with NR2154 Co-Founder Troels Faber, then became the Art and Design Director for LOVE Magazine, a Condé Nast publication in London, and currently for FREE Magazine in Tokyo and Rika Magazine in Amsterdam. Jacob’s clients include UNIQLO, Tom Ford, Georg Jensen, Rizzoli, New Museum, New York Times, Rika Magazine, BOONTHESHOP, DIESEL, Loewe, Hennessy, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co.

What was your very first job? 

I feel like I have never really had a job. While I was in school, I co-founded a skateboard magazine with Troels Faber in Denmark called Metropolis, which then developed into another magazine about fashion, music, art and design called F100. Since then, it has always been about passion, projects, and relationships, so work has never felt like a job to me.  

Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

I create and build brands, and then express them through storytelling. I am the Creative Director for our New York office and I oversee creative and strategic work for our brand partners, and for the publications we work with. Often we are working with brands that have existed for a long time and we reboot, rebrand, and push them back into the market. Or, we are helping new brands develop from the very beginning.

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

The experience of creating Metropolis showed me the power of creative work. We united a community in Scandinavia around that work and that passion, and that was really inspiring. I have always really enjoyed telling stories, curating, creating, designing, and art directing, so magazines gave me the opportunity to create everything down to the last detail, in a way that’s very in line with my nature and how I work. That grew very organically into working with brands, and I found that I really enjoy the strategic element of identifying opportunities and solving problems. 

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

I find inspiration from the people I work with and the clients and brands I collaborate with. People in New York are so focused on solving problems and pushing things forward, and that is close to my nature. I came here to work with the best people, and I find great inspiration from teamwork and collaboration.  

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

I am really proud of putting together my first magazine, Metropolis. That was my first experience of creating something from nothing, simply because of passion. Troels and I felt that something was missing and that our community needed a platform like Metrpolis in order to grow. Being involved in ever last detail of putting the magazine out into the world influenced everything that came next.
