David is a VP Creative Director at McCann NY, where he works on the US Army, NY Lottery and Lockheed Martin accounts. He’s originally from rural Virginia and attended VCU about a million years ago. He currently lives in Brooklyn with an extremely judgmental french bulldog named Ruthie.

What was your very first job? 

Jr. Art Director at Work Labs in Richmond, VA

Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

I am a Creative Director at McCann NY. I help manage the US Army, Lockheed Martin and NY Lottery accounts.

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

Oddly I never showed any natural artistic ability or took art classes in high school. But I loved designing flyers for my own and my friend's bands. And after a college freshman year of being a miserable Economics major, I transferred to VCU where I discovered Art Direction while taking Mass Communications intro courses.

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

I think it's important for us as marketers to actually "give people something".  No one wants to be advertised to -- so you have to give them something they actually want, whether it's an experience or a utility. A headline that makes you laugh out loud, a visual that sends your brain into a frenzy, or even something nontraditional that is useful in your life.

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

It would definitely be the Field Trip to Mars. ( vimeo.com/201781047 )  In bringing the first "group VR experience" to life, we had to create technology that hadn't been invented. It was a long, tough physical and emotional haul -- but life-alteringly rewarding as we watched kids experience the end result.
