Andrew is a Digital Creative Director for NBCUniversal Creative Group where he develops and creates company initiatives and corporate level web projects such as NBCUniversal.com, thetouratnbcstudios.com and many others. Over his career, he has acquired a diverse skill set, from being an Art Director at MTV Networks for 10 years, to short term engagements at various ad agencies such as DraftFCB, Y&R and others. Additionally, Andrew was grateful to have worked at the now closed Arnell Group for one year, where he worked on major Pepsi corporate soda branding. This was followed by working solo for 4 years out of an office space where he did numerous brand identities as well as packaging for a large scale home accessories company called Vanderbilt Home Collections. Some of his most favorite projects were doing annual reports for non-profits, and developing branding systems for NYC Outward Bound. He credits much of his success to having had great mentors, and God given opportunities through it all.

What was your very first job?

Well my very first job was a morning paper route. Must have been about 11 or 12. It was then I learned about being on time. In fact, once there was a blizzard, paper was suppose to always be delivered before 9AM. I didn’t deliver that day until around noon. One customer said, “Well, well, you are either late for today, or early for tomorrow.” That always stuck with me as a fantastic lesson in client serving.

Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

My title is Digital Creative Director. The work entails the creative direction on implementation of web / app related company initiatives. Designing initial wireframes, low fi comps, to overall graphics and UX direction. I also work on brand identity and internal corporate communication projects. 

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

My dad was an artist who did watercolors mostly. I have always loved to draw. Art class was by far my favorite over anything else. But never realized that there even was something called “Graphic Design” until junior year in high school. I remember my parents saying, “Really, a college degree in fine art? How will you earn a living." Kinda saw their point, and said to myself I'd give this major called graphic design a try. 

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

Everything changes so fast. I focus less on trying to keep up and more on basic human interaction and how we communicate changes over time. The great thing is, the web and interaction design has finally come to a place where there are few “best practices” and more exploration and boldness. I mean without that spirit something like Snapchat would have never been born. Following a legacy of what proper UX should be would have stifled how the app works. I think we are discovering that people actually love to learn, and because of that, we are less afraid to challenge a user and to expect them to want to engage.

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

Years ago…late 90s to be exact, I worked on and designed/developed a interactive CD called Brand Spankin New for MTV. The reason I point to this is because of how new the idea was to create a magazine that wasn’t just paper, but had an interactive component that showcased all the latest and greatest content they had to offer, but had to be viewed on your computer. As short lived as it was, it showed great creative risk and innovation. Those are always the most exciting projects to be a part of.
